"I never saw a better admonisher than the grave, anything more satisfying than a book, or anything safer than lack of socialization."

Domestic Violence/ Wife-Beating
|
{As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allaah is Ever Most High, Most Great.} (An-Nisaa’ [4]:34) Such discipline is subject to the condition that it should not be done harshly nor cause injury. It is for women who have evil, unjustified recalcitrancy in their conduct towards their husbands. This disciplinary action must be done by one who fears Allah and wishes to keep marital matters private; in no way does Islaam sanction domestic violence. There is a huge difference between this disciplary measure and abuse perpretrated by unrefined, ignorant, non-religious and hot-headed individuals. Abuse must stop and the appropriate measures to prevent it must be taken. Sisters should also fear Allah and maturely deal with and change any recalcitrancy and refractoriness on their part. It is noteworthy to mention that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never beated any of his wives. |
