Exaggerated Love

It doesn’t stop there. The followers of Munirah al-Qubaysi believe that those who follow Munirah are lik e temples which are built by Allah in order to serve and love her. The Qubaysiyaat believe the more they are lost in her love, the more they will become close to her until, thereby, they gain the cognizance of Allah and reach perfection. That is why her followers rush to kiss her hands, her feet and even to drink from the remainders of her beverages!

The Qubaysiyaat further regard it as a blessing and great gift to be given the chance and permission to sit in her presence. This is why the Qubaysiyaat consider the journey to meet Munirah in Syria as being waajib [an absolute must] for those given permission by the high-ranking women of the organization. They claim that the journey to hajj and u’mrah is ‘a journey to the built ka’bah’ and the journeying to Syria is ‘the journey to the metaphysical ka’bah.’

This reminds me of the verse of the Qur’aan: {And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allâh. But those who believe love Allah more (than anything else). If only, those who do wrong could see, when they will see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is Severe in punishment.}Surat Al Baqarah [2]:165

For sure, people look up to, admire and venerate such individuals because they believe that they are saints. Hence, whether it is due to some extraordinary feat(s) performed by the individual, apparent piety or undue exaggeration on the part of the followers, they ascribe closeness of Allah to their leader, which in this case is Munirah al Qubaysi. Such a suggestion can be very dangerous and may lead a person into incorrectly associating friendship and closeness between Allah and an individual that might in fact be an innovator and heretic.

For us to know who are the real awliyaa’ of Allah (a'zza wa jall), we need not bicker and differ. Let’s turn to Allah’s description of His awliyaa’ (close friends). For surely, He is the most cognizant regarding those whom He takes as His chosen and close servants.

In the Qur’aan, we find that Allah (a'zza wa jall) described His awliyaa’ (friends) as having two characteristics: eemaan (faith) and taqwaa (piety, awareness of Allah). Allah (a'zza wa jall) says (interpretation of the meaning):

{No doubt! Verily, the Awliyaa’ of Allah, no fear shall be upon them nor shall they grieve. Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah) and used to fear Allah much.}Yoonus [10]:62-63

In these verses we learn that one of the requisites of being from the true awliyaa’ of Allah is to fear Him which in turn necessitates the fear of not going against what which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded and to abstain from indulging in that which he forbade. One of the things which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) emphatically warned against are innovated matters in the religion; the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that is not a part of it, will have it rejected.” Islam is complete and therefore it makes sense to understand there is no need for adding, subtracting or interpolating into it. Allah (a'zza wa jall), the Most High and Glorious says, (interpretation of the meaning): {This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.}Al-Maa’idah [5]:3

Anything which is not referred to specifically in the canons of Islamic Law, and for which there is no evidence (daleel) in the Qur'aan or Prophetic Guidance, and which was not known at the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his Companions is a bid’ah, which is a new, invented and innovated way in the religion aimed at worshiping or drawing closer to Allah. We find that the Qubaysiyaat have done precisely this. It has been reported by eye-witnesses, who have attended the secret meetings of the Qubaysiyaat, that Munirah al Qubaysi sits on a raised platform, while her students sit below her. She points towards them saying, “…you are transgressing….you are darkened…Fawzia Al-Khaliwi, ‘Al Qubaysiyaat….Tandheem Khateer Tujhhiluhu Al Nisaa,’ <http://www.saaid.net/daeyat/fauzea/18.htm> They also chant and read certain innovated formulas which aren’t found in the Qur’aan or the Sunnah. The reference for this can be found on the trusted Arabic web site: Saaid.net.

When a person innovates something and adds something to Islam which does not belong to it, he is implying a number of bad things, each worse than the last, for example: the religion is lacking, that Allah did not complete and perfect it, there is room for improvement and that the religion remained imperfect from the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until the time when this innovator came along and completed it with his own ideas and desires.

It is imperative for every believer to know and realize that Allah, the Most High and Glorious, must only be worshipped in the ways and methods that He has prescribed. This principle applies whether it is something that can be done at any time or something that is limited to a specific time, as well as how it is to be done and how many times it is to be done.

With regards to adhkaar (selected formulas of remembrance) and du’aas (supplication) that Allah has prescribed and all kinds of worship that are not limited with regard to time and numbers, location or a particular way in which they are to be done, it is not permissible for us to adhere and force/prescribe upon others a particular way, time or number. In fact, we are to do these acts of worship without restrictions as they were prescribed. In matters where it is proven in the words or deeds of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that an action is to be done at a certain time or a certain number of times or in a certain place or in a certain manner, then we should worship Allah in accordance with what has been prescribed.

We find that the Companions were very strict on this. What follows are some heart-moving statements of the righteous before us, which should implant within our hearts knowledge and thereby strengthen our conviction in adhering to that which has been laid down by the Sharee’ah (sources of Islamic Law) and avoiding that which is innovated.

Statements of the Righteous and Knowledgeable

Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (radhi Allahu a'nhu) said,

"Every act of worship that the Companions did not do, do not do it."Abu Dawood

Ibn 'Umar (radhi Allahu a'nhuma) said:

“Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people see it as something good.”Ad-Daarimee

Ibn 'Abbaas (radhi Allahu a'nhuma) said:

“Indeed the most detestable of things to Allah are the innovations.”Al-Bayhaqee in as-Sunan al-Kubraa (4/316)

'Abdullaah Ibn Mas'ood (radhi Allahu a'nhu) said:

“Follow and do not innovate, for indeed you have been sufficed.” Reported authentically in Ad-Daarimee (no.211), At-Tabaraanee in Al-Kabeer (no. 8870), Al Bayhaqee (no. 204), Ibn Wadaah in Bid'ah Wan Nahee 'Anhaa (p. 10), and also from Qataadah on (p.11). Also related by Abee Khaythamah in Al Ilm (no. 54). Shaykh Al Albaanee has authenticated the narration in Bid'ah Wan Nahee 'Anhaa

Mu'aadh bin Jabal (radhi Allahu a'nhu) said:

"And I warn you of what is bid'ah, for all that is bid'ah is misguidance."Ash-Sharee'ah p. 55, also Abu Dawood with similar wording.

Once a man sneezed in the presence of Ibn Umar (radhi Allahu a'nhum) and said, "Praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger.’ Ibn Umar chastised the man and said,

"The Prophet has only taught us to say Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah)." Tirmidhi

The Taabi'ee (one who had seen and met a Companion of the Prophet (sallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam) and not the Prophet (sallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam)), Imaam az-Zuhree, commented,

"Clinging to the Sunnah (Prophetic Guidance) is to be saved, and Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) said regarding the Sunnah, “Like the Ark of Noah', he who embarked upon it was saved, and he who did not was destroyed."Ad-Daarimee

Sufyaan ath-Thowree (rahimahullah) mentions:

“Innovation is more beloved to Iblees (satan) than sin, since a sin may be repented from but innovation is not repented from.” Al-Laalikaa'ee - Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah (no. 238)

Al-Fudayl bin 'Iyaad (rahimahullah) mentions:

“I met the best of people, all of them people of the Sunnah, and they used to forbid from accompanying the people of innovation.” Al-Laalikaa'ee - Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah (no.267)

Ibn Wahb said that Ibn Mahdee informed him that a man asked Ibraaheem an-Nakha'ee about al-ahwaa' [i.e. bid'ah], do they have anything from khayr (goodness)? So he said:

“Allah did not make in anything from it (even the amount equal to) a mustard seed of khayr, and it is nothing but an adornment from ash-Shaytaan, and the affair is nothing except the first affair [that which the Prophet (sallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam) and his Companions were upon].'' [Usoolus-Sunnah of Ibn Abee Zamaneen #230]

The statement of the great Imaam Abu Haneefah, one of the imams of the four famous madhaahib [schools of thought], should echo and resound within the innermost parts of our hearts and minds, when he said:

"Adhere to the aathaar (narrations) and the tareeqah (way) of the Pious Predecessors and beware of newly invented matters, for all of it is innovation."Reported by As-Suyootee in Sawn al Mantaq wal-Kalaam p.32

'Umar Ibn 'Abdul 'Azeez said:

“Stop where the people have stopped! For indeed, they stopped upon receiving knowledge. The clear evidences would suffice them, and they were the strongest at manifesting them. If there was any merit in something, then they would be the most deserving of it. So if you say: 'It was introduced after them’, then no one introduces something into it except that he has opposed their guidance, and desired other than their example. They have described it from what was sufficient, and they have spoken concerning it - what sufficed. What is above them is excessiveness, and what is below them is inadequacy. Some people have fallen short of them, and so they have drawn away. And others have transgressed them, so they have become extreme. But indeed they were between these two (extremes) upon a straight path.”Reported by Ibn Qudaamah in Al Burhaan li Bayaanil Qur'aan (p. 88-89), as a statement of 'Abdul 'Azeez Ibn Abil Maajishoon, and then he said: He related its meaning back to 'Umar Ibn 'Abdul 'Azeez. Al Haafidh Ibnul Jawzee in Manaqibul Umar Ibn Abdul Azeez (p. 83-84). Al Haafidh Ibn Rajab Fadhlul Ilmis Salaf (p. 36)

Imaam al-Awzaa'ee said: “Stick to the example of those who came before you (Salafus Saalih), even if the people reject you. And beware of the opinions of men, even if they beautify it for you with their speech.” Reported by Khateebul Baghdaadee in Sharaf As'haabil Hadeeth (p. 7). Imaam Al Aajurree in Ash Sharee'ah (p. 58). Ibn 'Abdul Barr in Jaami'ul Ilm Wa Fadhlihi (2/114). Imaam adh Dhahabee confirmed it in Siyar A'alaamun Nubalaa (7/120). Shaykh Al Albaanee authenticated it in Mukhtasir Al Uloow (p. 138).

Muhammad Ibn Abdur Rahmaan al-Adramee said to a man who was speaking about an innovation, and calling the people to it: “Did the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam), Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthmaan, and 'Alee have knowledge of it, or did they not know of it?”
The man said: “They did not know of it.”
He said: “Something which they did not have knowledge of, you know!?!”
The man said: “Then I say that they did know it.”
He said: “Was it sufficient for them that they did not speak about it, nor call the people to it, or was it not sufficient for them?”
The man said: “Of course it was sufficient for them.”

He said: “So something which was sufficient for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam) and his Caliphs is not sufficient for you!?!” So the man refrained, and the Caliph who was present there said:

“May Allah not suffice for the ones who are not satisfied with what they found sufficient.”Reported by al Khateeb in Taareekhul Baghdaad (10/75). Ibnul Jawzee in Manaaqibul Imaam Ahmad (p. 431, 436). Ibn Qudaamah in At Tawaabeen (p. 194). Imaam adh Dhahabee in Siyar A'alaamun Nubalaa (11/131). Imaam Al Aajurree in Ash Sharee'ah (p. 91,95). Ibn Katheer in Al Bidaayah Wan Nihaayah (10/335).

Abu Aaliyah said, "Learn Islam, then when you have learned Islam, do not turn away from it to the right or to the left. But be upon the Straight Path and be upon the Sunnah of your Prophet (sallallahu a'lyhi wa sallam) and that which his companions were upon… And beware of these innovations because they cause enmity and hatred amongst you, but stick to the original state of affairs that was there before they divided."Al-Hilya of Abu Nu'aym 2/218
